The Man of the Moment

While sitting at my desk one afternoon, going about my normal business of creating all things beautiful for the editorial photo shoots, I could hear the features writers (Julia, Svenja and Tracy) behind me getting ready to meet with our editor, Frith Thomas, for their May features meeting. While discussing their forthcoming articles, I happened to overhear them mentioning 10 Things you Didn’t Know About… DJ Fresh.

Immediately my ears were fully tuned in – after all, woman&home is a glossy magazine for the fashion- and beauty-conscious 35+ WOMAN. While I’m very honoured to meet many South African female celebrities, it was going to be a refreshing change to have an opportunity to now work with a male celeb and it was DJ Fresh at that.

DJ Fresh (real name Thato Sikwane) first became popular for his breakfast show on YFM, which he hosted for 8 years, and is now best known for hosting The Fresh Drive on 5FM. Fresh is a man who performs many roles – a husband, a father, a businessman (as he has also launched a company called Big Dawg Productions) and he has a big heart too as he finds time to run the annual DJ Fresh Scholarship Programme, which awards tertiary scholarships to deserving students who cannot afford to study.

At the photo shoot, the Tom-Cat Aviator Chair (a very fitting name for a DJ Fresh photo shoot, wouldn’t you say?) was placed elegantly in the middle of the studio floor as the crew, Julia and I all waited anxiously for Fresh’s arrival. To my surprise, the theory that men get ready more quickly than women proved to be true as, once he was there, the whole photo shoot took about 45 minutes all in all, including make-up, wardrobe and time for Julia to squeeze in a few extra questions.

Overall, my experience of styling and co-ordinating a photo shoot for a South African male celeb was a brief one but at least Julia and I were able to sneak a quick snapshot to capture the moment.
